From here, we will wander classical ruins such as the Colosseum and take in masterpieces by the likes of Michelangelo. We will then make our way to Amelia, Italy and participate in the Association for Research into Crimes against Art (ARCA) Interdisciplinary Conference. This fascinating experience will grow your knowledge of the state of cultural heritage protection and the vast world of art crime. Our time in Italy wraps up in Florence where we dive deep into the heart of the Renaissance and experience the beauties of the Tuscan region.

Participants will be enrolled in and complete simultaneous coursework for both HUMN 2113 and HUMN 2223.

Spain 鈥 Madrid & Barcelona

Art Focus

Beautiful panoramic view of Barcelona cityscape, Sagrada Familia - famous architectural attraction on a background.

Explore and travel through centuries of art, architecture, and culture in Spain.  This study abroad experience centers around Madrid and Barcelona with day trips from these major Spanish cultural cornerstones. Japan

Yasaka-dori early morning with street lanterns and the Tower of Yasaka (Hokan-ji Temple), Kyoto, Japan

Japan is extremely clean and safe, with one of the lowest crime rates in the world. The public transit system is highly efficient, clean, and punctual. The food is nutritious and delicious while it may seem very different to an American palate. The people live in harmony and peace (also they are courteous and helpful). The isolated geography has shaped the culture, food, and architecture. Come join the group and experience what you have been missing! Speaking Japanese is not a prerequisite to participate in this trip.

Impact of Study Abroad on Intercultural Sensitivity

In collaboration with 91影视鈥檚 Office of Planning and Institutional Research, a pre- and post-study was conducted on our study abroad participants to measure the impact of the study abroad experience on students鈥 intercultural sensitivity. When comparing the pre- and post-surveys, two items were found to have significant changes. Those changes were 鈥淚 can be as sociable as I want to be when interacting with people from different cultures,鈥 and 鈥淚 tend to wait before forming an impression of culturally-distinct counterparts.鈥 Of the students that participated in the research, 50% of them had never traveled outside the United States prior to the study abroad trip. In the open-ended question about civic or community involvement, students reported interest in volunteering in the following areas: hospitals, dental clinics, Tulsa City-County Library, voice for Study Abroad, child development, arts, language club, cultural event activities, hosting an exchange student, parks and recreation, and colleges.
